What is the Role of Sleep in Losing Weight?

26 Feb

Sleep is very crucial for an optimal health. If you're trying to lose weight, the amount of sleep you get may be just as important as your diet and exercise. Our body does not just run on food, water & air. We need proper sleep as lack of sleep leads to depression, irritability, memory loss and obesity. Therefore it’s very important to understand how lack of proper sleep makes us gain weight.

Poor Sleep Can Increase Your Appetite; this disturbs two important hunger hormones, Ghrelin and Leptin. Cortisol is a stress hormone that may also increase appetite.

So these two factors that play major role in our appetite regulation Leptin and Ghrelin.

  • Leptin is our satiety hormone which tell our body that we have had enough to eat, and gives you that full feeling.
  • Ghrelin is hunger hormone and sends signal to our body that it needs food.

Studies shows that when we do not get adequate sleep, the level of Leptin decreases and level of Ghrelin increases, and the result is you don't feel full as fast you normally would and infect you feel hungrier then you normally are therefore  resulting in over eating which hinders your weight loss journey.

So it is need of the time to make a good space for a restful sleep if you really want to shed those extra kilos!

Note: Along with eating right and exercising, getting quality sleep is an important part of weight maintenance.
